About Apple Watch

Lineup: Apple Watch SE 2 (40mm $249 / 44mm $279, GPS), Series 10 (42mm $399 / 46mm $429, larger thinner display), and Apple Watch Ultra 2 (49mm $799, titanium, 36-hour battery, Action button).

Cellular vs GPS: Cellular adds $100 plus ~$10/month carrier line. Worth it only if you regularly leave your iPhone behind (runs without a phone, Apple Pay anywhere). Most buyers should skip cellular.

Band economy: Apple bands cost $49–$149. Third-party silicone bands on Amazon at $7–$15 fit perfectly and are the easiest way to refresh the look without paying Apple's prices.

What's a good price for an Apple Watch?

SE 2 (40mm, $249): Good price $199 (Amazon, Best Buy mid-year). Excellent $179 during Prime Day or Black Friday. Floor: $169.

Series 10 (42mm, $399): Good $349 (frequent on Amazon). Excellent $299 (Prime Day, Black Friday). Floor: $279 briefly.

Series 10 (46mm, $429): Good $379. Excellent $329. Floor: $309.

Ultra 2 (49mm, $799): Apple holds Ultra firmer. Good $749 (Amazon), excellent $699 (Black Friday). Floor: $649 briefly.

Refurbished: Apple Certified Refurb runs ~15% off (Series 10 around $339, Ultra 2 around $679) — full Apple 1-year warranty, new battery and casing, the smartest "no-wait" path.

Used (Swappa / Back Market): A previous-year Series 9 in Excellent condition sits at $199–$249 and is functionally similar to Series 10 for non-athletic users — best value-per-dollar on the secondary market.

Where to buy — retailer notes

Apple Store: Only place for full case/band customization. Education store (.edu) gives modest discounts plus seasonal AirPods bundles (back-to-school July–September). Engraving is free.

Amazon: Most consistent discounter. Discount pattern varies by case color — Silver and Midnight drop first, Gold and Slate hold higher. Verify Amazon.com is the seller.

Best Buy: Matches Amazon on sales and offers open-box "Excellent" Series 10 at $329–$349. My Best Buy Plus members get early Prime Day-equivalent pricing.

Costco: Series 10 GPS bundles often include a free Sport Loop or Solo Loop band ($49 value). Membership required. Their 90-day return policy is the best in the industry for a watch.

Target: Solid Circle Bonus and RedCard combinations can stack to ~10% effective discount. Limited band selection.

Walmart: Sometimes undercuts Amazon by $10–$20 on SE 2. Limited Ultra 2 stock.

Apple Certified Refurbished: Best risk-adjusted price all year. Series 10 and SE 2 stock turns over weekly.

Buyer Questions

SE 2 vs Series 10 — which should I buy?
Series 10 adds an always-on display, ECG, blood oxygen sensor, faster charging, a brighter and larger screen, and a newer chip. SE 2 keeps the core fitness and notification experience for $150 less. If this is your first Apple Watch and you mainly want notifications and workout tracking, SE 2 is plenty. If you'll use heart-rhythm features, sleep apnea detection, or want the always-on screen, get Series 10.
Series 10 vs Ultra 2 — is Ultra 2 worth $400 more?
Ultra 2 adds titanium build, 36-hour battery (vs 18), dual-frequency GPS, a brighter screen, the Action button, and full diving compatibility. Worth it for marathon runners, hikers, scuba divers, and anyone who hates daily charging. Overkill for office workers.
Should I get cellular?
Only if you regularly exercise or run errands without your iPhone. Cellular adds $100 upfront and roughly $10/month on your carrier bill. Most users with an iPhone in their pocket will never use the cellular feature enough to justify it.
When does Apple Watch typically go on sale?
Prime Day (mid-July), Apple back-to-school (July–September, includes AirPods bundle for students), Black Friday / Cyber Monday (peak discount), and post-holiday clearance (early January). Apple itself rarely discounts; the markdowns happen at third-party retailers.
Is Apple Certified Refurbished safe?
Yes — Apple replaces the battery and casing on refurbished watches, ships with a new band and box, and includes the same 1-year warranty as new. The unit is functionally identical to retail. Best risk-adjusted price all year.
Should I wait for Apple Watch Series 11?
Series 11 is expected fall 2026 with rumored blood pressure monitoring and a redesigned chassis. If your current watch works fine, waiting until October–November is reasonable. If you need one now or find Series 10 at $299, the savings outweigh the wait for most buyers.
