AirPods Max Prices Compared
AirPods Max retail at $549 from Apple, but Amazon and Best Buy regularly drop them to $399–479.
About AirPods Max
Specs: $549 MSRP. USB-C (2024 refresh) replaced the original Lightning port. Apple H1 chip (unchanged from 2020), 20-hour battery with ANC on, computational audio, dynamic head tracking. Aluminum cups, breathable mesh canopy.
What hasn't changed: The 2024 refresh added USB-C and new colors but kept the same internals — including the H1 chip. Audio performance is identical to the original.
Apple ecosystem advantage: Instant pairing with iCloud devices, automatic switching between iPhone/iPad/Mac, "Hey Siri" hands-free, and Find My — unmatched on any non-Apple headphones.
What's a good price for AirPods Max?
Full price: $549 at Apple year-round. Almost never the right move.
Good price: $449–$479 (Amazon, Best Buy, Target). This range appears multiple times per year — patience pays.
Excellent price: $399–$429 during Prime Day (July), Black Friday/Cyber Monday (late November), and the post-holiday clearance window (January 1–15). $399 is the historical floor.
Apple Certified Refurbished: $469 with new battery, new ear cushions, full 1-year Apple warranty, and same return policy as new. The smartest "guaranteed inventory" play if you can't wait for a sale.
Avoid: Used eBay listings under $300 — counterfeit AirPods Max are common, and replacement ear cushions cost $69 directly from Apple.
Where to buy — retailer notes
Apple Store: All five colors and engraving available. Full MSRP. Education store (.edu email) gives modest discounts. Only realistic reason to buy here: AppleCare+ ($59 for 2 years) bundles cleanly.
Amazon: Most frequent discounter. Watch the per-color price — sometimes Midnight or Starlight drop $50 while Orange and Purple stay at MSRP. Verify the seller is Amazon.com, not third-party.
Best Buy: Matches Amazon's sale prices and adds open-box "Excellent" units at $429–$449. My Best Buy Plus membership adds 5% off.
Costco: Carries select colors at $479 year-round. Membership required. Their 90-day return window is the most forgiving in the industry.
Target: Less frequent discounter, but Circle members get 5% back. Worth checking if you carry the RedCard (additional 5%).
Apple Refurbished: Identical hardware, new battery and cushions, original warranty. Stock turns over weekly — refresh the page.
